대학로를 떠올리면 누구나 비슷한 장면이 먼저 스친다. 공연 시작 한 시간 전부터 골목을 서성거리던 사람들, 막이 내린 뒤에도 쉽게 발걸음을 떼지 못하고 이야기를 나누던 관객들, 카페와 식당 사이를 오가며 공연의 한 장면을 떠올리던 밤의 공기다. 누군가에게는 생애 첫 공연의 설렘이 시작된 곳이고, 누군가에게는 무대 위에서 실패의 아픔과 환호의 기쁨을 동시에 경험한 삶의 터전이었다. 또 다른 이에게는 친구와 연인·가족과 함께 특별한 추억으로 남아 있는 시간이 쌓인 공간이다.
대학로의 진짜 매력은 공연장 문을 열고 들어가는 순간부터가 아니다. 공연을 보기 전 골목을 걷던 기대감, 공연이 끝난 뒤 쉽게 돌아가지 못하던 여운, 다음 공연 포스터 앞에서 고민하던 선택의 순간까지가 모두 대학로의 풍경이다. 좁은 객석에서 배우와 숨을 같이 하며 느끼던 뜨거운 공기, 극장을 나서도 쉽게 가시지 않는 감정의 결까지. 그것이 바로 우리가 대학로를 사랑한 이유다.
그런데 지금 대학로는 조금 다른 얼굴을 하고 있다. 공연은 여전히 이어지고 수많은 관객이 찾아오지만, 공연이 끝난 뒤의 시간은 예전보다 확연히 짧아졌다. 관객들은 정시에 맞춰 도착하고, 커튼콜이 끝나면 마치 약속이라도 한 듯 빠르게 흩어진다. 극장 안에서는 화려한 경험이 펼쳐지지만, 문을 나서는 순간 그 경험은 급격히 식는다. 대학로는 여전히 '공연을 보는 곳'이라는 명성을 유지하지만, 공연을 둘러싼 시간과 감정, 머무름의 풍경은 점점 옅어지고 있다.
When people think of Daehak-ro, a similar scene comes to mind first. People lingering in the alleys an hour before a show starts, audience members staying and talking even after the curtains fall, and the night air carrying memories of a scene from the play as people move between cafes and restaurants. For some, it was where the excitement of their very first show began. For others, it was where they experienced both the pain of failure and the joy of applause on stage. And for many, it is a place where special memories with friends, loved ones, and family have accumulated over time.
The true charm of Daehak-ro does not begin the moment you open the theater door and step inside. The anticipation while walking through the alleys before a show, the lingering afterglow that makes it hard to leave afterward, and the moment of decision while pondering in front of the next show's poster?all of these make up the scenery of Daehak-ro. It is the warmth of breathing in sync with the actors in a small theater and the emotional resonance that remains long after leaving the theater. That is precisely why we loved Daehak-ro.
Today, however, Daehak-ro wears a somewhat different face. Performances continue, and countless audiences still visit, but the time spent after a show has become noticeably shorter. People arrive just on time, and once the curtain call ends, they disperse almost as if by prior arrangement. Spectacular experiences unfold inside the theater, yet the moment audiences step outside, those experiences cool rapidly. Daehak-ro still retains its reputation as a "place to watch performances," but the time, emotions, and lingering atmosphere surrounding those performances are gradually fading.
서울의 다른 지역이 빠르게 변화하며 각자의 새로운 이미지를 만들어가는 동안, 대학로는 그만의 고유한 기억과 감각을 어떻게 오늘의 언어로 다시 보여줄 것인지를 고민하고 있다. 공연이 많은 거리라는 명성 너머, 예전처럼 오래 머무르고 싶은 문화의 공간으로 다시 기억될 수 있을까. 바로 이 질문에서 출발한 시도가 '큰 즐거움이 있는 길, 대-락樂로'다.
우리가 사랑했던 그 거리
대-락樂로는 대학로에서 시작한 이름이지만, '대학로'로 불리는 지리적 경계에 갇히지 않으려 한다. 대학로를 중심으로 주변 골목과 공간, 공연의 결까지 함께 바라보며 더 넓은 문화의 흐름으로 이어가려는 시도다. 서울문화재단이 먼저 길을 열지만, 이 거리를 걷는 시민과 공연을 만드는 예술가, 공간을 지키는 상인, 일상에서 이 풍경을 경험하는 모두가 함께 채워가는 과정이다.
대학로의 본질은 단순히 공연이 많은 곳이라는 사실만으로 설명되지 않는다. 작은 극장이 빽빽하게 들어선 골목, 오래된 간판과 포스터로 뒤덮인 거리, 공연을 기다리는 사람들로 북적이는 밤의 풍경까지. 대학로는 공연을 둘러싼 삶의 장면이 함께 숨 쉬는 공간이었다. 대-락樂로는 바로 그 기억을 오늘의 감각으로 다시 꺼내본다. 공연이 어떻게 일상에 스며드는지, 거리의 분위기가 어떻게 기억으로 남는지. 거창한 변화보다 작은 연결의 순간들이 이곳을 살리고, 대학로는 다시 살아 있는 문화 공간이 된다.
'대-락樂로'라는 이름은 그 방향을 담고 있다. '대大'는 규모가 아니라 오래 남는 경험의 깊이를 뜻한다. '락樂'은 일시적인 흥겨움이 아니라 공연을 통해 마음속에 자리 잡는 기쁨이다. '로路'는 그 기쁨이 머무는 길이자 사람과 시간을 잇는 경로다. 결국 공연이 시작되고 끝나는 극장 안을 넘어, 그 전후의 시간까지 하나의 흐름으로 묶는 이름이다.
While other areas of Seoul change rapidly to create their own new identities, Daehak-ro is considering how to reinterpret its unique memories and sensibilities in the language of today. Beyond its reputation as a district filled with shows, can it once again be remembered as a cultural destination where people want to linger, just like in the past? This very question is where the campaign "DaeROCK-ro: The Street of Great Joy" began.
The Street We Loved
Although DaeROCK-ro began as a name rooted in Daehak-ro, it aims not to be confined within the geographic boundaries of "Daehak-ro." Centered on Daehak-ro, it extends to the surrounding alleyways, spaces, and artistic textures, aiming to connect to a broader cultural current. The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture may take the first step, but this initiative will be shaped by everyone: citizens who walk these streets, artists who create performances, merchants who sustain local spaces, and all those who experience this landscape in their daily lives.
The essence of Daehak-ro cannot be explained simply by the fact that it has many shows. From the alleys packed with small theaters, streets covered in old signs and posters, to the night scenery bustling with people waiting for a show, Daehak-ro has been a space where the scenes of life surrounding performance breathe together. DaeROCK-ro seeks to bring those memories back into today's sensibilities. How performance seeps into daily life, how the atmosphere of a street becomes a lasting memory. Rather than grand changes, it is the small moments of connection that revitalize this place and restore Daehak-ro as a living cultural district.
The name "DaeROCK-ro" embodies this vision. "Dae (Great)" represents not scale, but the depth of a long-lasting experience. "ROCK (Joy)" signifies not fleeting excitement, but the joy that takes root in our hearts through performance. "Ro (Street)" is the road where that joy lingers, connecting people and time. Ultimately, it is a name that binds the time before and after a show into a single flow, extending beyond the inside of the theater where a performance begins and ends.
2026년 하반기에는 이 흐름을 구체화할 프로그램이 이어진다. 첫째는 '제철연극'. 각 과일이 가장 맛있는 제철이 있듯, 연극에도 관객과 가장 뜨겁게 만나야 할 골든타임이 있다. 대부분 공연은 정해진 기간만 무대에 오른다. 즉, 그 작품이 공연되는 바로 지금이 아니면 다시는 만날 수 없는, 세상에서 가장 신선하고 귀한 '제철 예술'인 셈이다. '제철연극'은 이처럼 놓치면 아까운 공연을 개막하기 전부터 미리 즐길 수 있는 특별한 공연 프리뷰 프로그램이다. 공연장에 가기 전, 대학로의 중심에 위치한 서울연극센터에 잠시 들러 당신이 만나게 될 연극의 다정한 예고편을 살펴보자.
둘째는 '애프터시어터'. 막이 내려도 당신의 이야기는 멈추지 않는다. 많은 관객이 공연 후의 먹먹함을 안고 서둘러 집으로 향하지만, 그 소중한 여운이 지하철 안내 방송 소리에 묻혀 순식간에 사라지는 게 너무 아깝다고 생각한 적은 없는가? '애프터시어터'는 그 여운을 즐거운 '대화'와 '머무름'으로 바꾸는 프로그램이다. 공연장 밖으로 나온 당신을 위해, 시원한 맥주 한잔 준비하고 기다리고자 한다. 때로는 연출가가 깜짝 방문해 비하인드 스토리를 들려주고, 때로는 처음 만난 관객끼리 나만의 결말을 공유하기도 한다. 공연은 무대 위에서 마침표를 찍지만, 우리의 진짜 이야기는 이 맥주 한잔과 함께 비로소 시작될 테니.
셋째, AI 공연 큐레이션과 '극캐감별사'. 매일 수십 편의 공연이 막을 올린다. 정보의 바다 속에서 정작 내가 무엇을 좋아할지 몰라 방황하는 분들이 많을 수밖에. 서울연극센터에 마련될 '공SPI'(공연 + Stage Pick Index)가 이 고민을 해결해주고자 한다. 단순히 예매 인기 순위만 보여주는 게 아니다. 오늘 대학로에 내리는 비의 양, 햇볕의 정도, 특별한 기념일, 그리고 당신의 취향까지 분석한다. 그리고 오늘의 대학로 분위기와 어울리는 공연을 추천해준다. "비 오는 날, 조용히 사색에 잠기고 싶은 당신에게 어울리는 연극입니다."
'대-락樂로'는 공연장으로 사람들을 끌어들이려는 캠페인이 아니다. 이미 대학로를 아는 사람에게는 익숙한 기억을 다시 떠올리게 하고, 처음 찾아온 사람에게는 공연과 거리가 함께 있는 새 인상을 남긴다. 공연을 보기 위해 조금 일찍 도착해 걷는 사람, 공연이 끝난 뒤 주변을 천천히 둘러보는 사람, 추천받은 작품을 통해 새로운 취향을 발견하는 사람. 각자의 방식으로 시간이 조금씩 길어질 때, 대학로와 그 일대는 단순한 공연 집적지가 아니라 공연이 삶의 일부가 되는 문화권으로 변한다. 이처럼 리브랜딩을 통해 새로운 이름을 붙이는 게 아니라, 대학로와 주변 공간이 지닌 진짜 얼굴을 다시 발견하고자 한다.
대학로는 여전히 공연의 거리다. 다만 이제는 그 말이 조금 더 풍성해져야 한다. 공연을 보고 끝나는 곳이 아니라, 공연을 통해 머무르고 연결되는 곳이라는 점이다. 대-락樂로는 시민이 공연을 더 편하게 만나고, 예술가가 작품의 맥락을 더 넓게 펼치고, 거리가 다시 문화의 기억을 품는 일이다. 이를 통해 일상의 작은 장면들이 달라질 때, 대학로는 다시 '큰 즐거움이 있는 길'로 기억될 것이다.
In the second half of 2026, a series of programs will bring this vision to life. The first is "Seasonal Theater." Just as every fruit has its peak season when it tastes best, every play has a golden time when it connects most powerfully with its audience. Most shows only stay on stage for a set period. In other words, if you do not catch the piece right now while it is being performed, you will never see it again?making it the freshest and most precious "seasonal art" in the world. "Seasonal Theater" is a special preview program that allows audiences to enjoy these must-see shows even before they officially open. Before heading to the theater, visitors can stop by the Seoul Theater Center, located in the heart of Daehak-ro, and enjoy a friendly introduction to the performance they are about to see.
The second program is "After Theater." Even after the curtain falls, your story does not end. Many audience members head straight home carrying the overwhelming emotions of a show, but have you ever felt it was a waste for that precious lingering feeling to vanish in an instant, drowned out by the subway announcements? After Theater transforms that lingering resonance into opportunities for "conversation" and "connection." For those stepping out of the theater, a cold glass of beer will be waiting. Sometimes a director may drop by unexpectedly to share behind-the-scenes stories. Other times, audience members meeting for the first time may exchange their own interpretations and endings. The performance may conclude on stage, but the real story begins over that first sip.
The third is an AI performance curation and "Theater Character Matchmaker." Dozens of performances open every day, making it easy to feel overwhelmed by choices. The "GongSPI (Stage Pick Index for Performing Arts)," to be established at the Seoul Theater Center, aims to solve this dilemma. It will analyze factors such as today's weather in Daehak-ro, the amount of sunshine, special occasions, and your personal preferences. You will then receive a curation like, "For someone who enjoys contemplation like you, we recommend this play, which perfectly matches the mood of a rainy day in Daehak-ro."
The Street Filled With Our Time
"DaeROCK-ro" is not a campaign designed simply to draw people into theaters. For those already familiar with Daehak-ro, it rekindles cherished memories. For first-time visitors, it leaves a fresh impression of a place where performances and streets coexist. People who arrive a bit early and stroll through the neighborhood, those who linger after a show, and those who discover new tastes through personalized recommendations all contribute to extending their time in this district. As those moments lengthen, Daehak-ro and its surrounding area evolve from a cluster of performance venues into a cultural zone where theater becomes part of everyday life. This is not about imposing a new identity?it is about rediscovering the authentic character that Daehak-ro and its neighboring spaces have always possessed.
Daehak-ro remains the street of performance. But that phrase must now carry a richer meaning. It is not merely a place to watch a show and leave. It is a place to stay, connect, and be transformed through performance. DaeROCK-ro is about making it easier for citizens to encounter shows, allowing artists to expand the context of their work, and enabling the street to embrace cultural memories once again. When these small, everyday scenes begin to change, Daehak-ro will once again be remembered as "The Street of Great Joy."
